Realism and Representational Art

Blog # 1 - May 12, 2019 - Hello to anyone who has ventured into this blog concerning realism and representational art. My professional name is E. M. Sutherland and I'm a visual artist who paints primarily in watercolor as well as acrylics and pen & ink drawings. As the title of my blog suggests, I like to paint realistic paintings using my artistic license to leave out and add things to scenes to tell a story or add interest because most of my subjects tell stories of their own. The subjects that interest me the most are small towns in Texas, since I live in Texas, but also rural Texas scenes of ranching and farming. These subjects interest me because many of the things I paint and draw are disappearing as urbanization takes away many of the wonderful old buildings that make the smaller towns interesting to me. I also do cityscapes in Texas cities as they are often a mixture of modern buildings with antique store fronts mixed in.

Each time I post a blog I'll post one of my paintings that are in my website on Fine Art America. Today I'm posting my painting titled "North Street - Uvalde" that is a painting that I did in 2015 of North Street in Uvalde, Texas where I was raised. It's a watercolor painting on watercolor paper with some acrylic paint to capture highlights. This painting was awarded the Silver Medal at the Bosque Art Classic art show in Clifton, Texas, which is a show that specializes in realism paintings. It also sold this painting at the same show. I begin with a detailed pencil drawings for all my work using reference photos, some recent, some from years earlier. Art is a real joy for me and allows me to express myself in ways that I don't often talk about.

I hope you will stop by my blogs regularly to see what I've created and what new Items I working on and I'll attempt to post regularly as a way of making me to work every day.
