This is a scene of some grand old live oak trees in Austin, Texas, with a man walking under the trees with a dappled sidewalk in the sunshine and shadow. It was such a wonderful, peaceful scene it really made me want to paint it. These scenes are everywhere in Austin and other Texas cities. The shade offers relief from the hot sun during the summertime. In this case there is even a nice rock wall for people sit on in the shade of the tree the makes this location even more pleasant.
Growing up in the small southwest Texas town of Uvalde gave me a real appreciation for the rural country life in the semi-arid southwest. I was always enjoyed seeing the homes, building and tools that people used to make a living ranching and raising livestock. During my upbringing I knew I enjoyed seeing the barns, pens, pickup trucks and tractors used to work on ranches. Since my father ran service stations I was interested in subjects like rural country stores, old gas pumps as well as the old vehicles, and other related equipment. The graying of the cedar fence posts, old lumber on the barns, the rusting barbed wire, and tin roofs and dry leather of saddles were things I enjoyed seeing.
