When I was in Uvalde, Texas, on President's Day (2019) I was driving around looking for scenes to photograph reference photos. As I drove around the square I realized that as was was driving down West Street I could see both the Grand Opera House and the Kincaid Hotel across the square with the fountain in the foreground. Both buildings are clear because the pecan trees were still without their leaves for the winter. It was a great scene for me to paint that captures Uvalde's center.
Growing up in the small southwest Texas town of Uvalde gave me a real appreciation for the rural country life in the semi-arid southwest. I was always enjoyed seeing the homes, building and tools that people used to make a living ranching and raising livestock. During my upbringing I knew I enjoyed seeing the barns, pens, pickup trucks and tractors used to work on ranches. Since my father ran service stations I was interested in subjects like rural country stores, old gas pumps as well as the old vehicles, and other related equipment. The graying of the cedar fence posts, old lumber on the barns, the rusting barbed wire, and tin roofs and dry leather of saddles were things I enjoyed seeing.
